Reading India’s organic chemicals export statistics (HS Chapter 29)
Published: 28 August 2026 · Category: Insights
What this article is
This is an Insights note on how to use official Indian merchandise trade statistics when evaluating manufacturing location. It does not provide agrochemical-specific export totals, forecasts, or Chemlyst project outcomes.
Observed data (reproducible)
Source: Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S), Quarterly Review of Merchandise Foreign Trade, period October–December 2024 (third quarter of financial year 2024–25).
Product scope: ITC-HS Chapter 29 — Organic chemicals (two-digit commodity group in India’s trade classification). This chapter includes many organic intermediates and actives but is not limited to crop-protection products and excludes unrelated chapters (for example finished formulations classified elsewhere).
What to extract: Table 4a (Top 15 two-digit level ITC-HS Commodity Groups — Export) lists Chapter 29 among India’s leading export groups for the quarter, with value reported in USD billion in the published tables. Use the PDF table directly for the exact figure — do not rely on rounded summaries in third-party articles.

Broader chemicals context (different scope): The Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals India Chem 2025 publication reports FY 2024–25 exports for chemicals and chemical products excluding pharmaceuticals and fertilizers at ₹3,92,770 crore (see Table 11). That aggregate spans multiple HS chapters and is not an agrochemical-only number.

How procurement teams should use this
| Question | Use Chapter 29 QRMFT | Use India Chem tables |
|---|---|---|
| Macro export trend for organic chemicals | Yes, with chapter definition | Only if you accept the wider basket |
| Product-specific export readiness | No | No |
| Facility quality or registration | No | No |
For agrochemical technicals, pair macro data with site COA, methods, impurity limits, permits and destination registration — not national totals.
Chemlyst role
Chemlyst coordinates technical and commercial interfaces for manufacturing at qualified partner facilities. This article does not state that Chemlyst exports product X or holds registration Y.
Limitations
Trade statistics lag real time, may be revised, and mix diverse products within a chapter. This note is not customs, legal or regulatory advice.
