Project scenario: mapping before manufacture
Customer Requirement
Manufacture a multi-step agrochemical intermediate where reaction conditions, corrosion and high-vacuum finishing could not be supported at the customer’s existing site.
Technical Challenge
The route combined a corrosive step, a hydrogenation stage and a thermally sensitive high-vacuum distillation. A single “standard” multipurpose plant would have forced compromises on MOC, pressure rating or separation.
Chemistry
Halogenation and reduction stages, followed by condensation and high-vacuum purification (sub-millimetre mercury operating range for the finishing step).
Required Equipment
Glass-lined and SS-316 reactors (1–5 KL), hydrogenation capability with appropriate pressure rating, high-vacuum distillation train, centrifuge filtration and inerting utilities.
Facility Selection
Chemlyst mapped the route across the network: reaction blocks qualified at one cluster, high-vacuum finishing at a site with a dedicated distillation platform. One Chemlyst interface coordinated both without publishing partner identities.
Scale-Up
Laboratory data was reviewed, then a 500 L trial confirmed heat removal and work-up times before a 3 KL commercial campaign was approved.
Manufacturing
Commercial batches were executed with agreed in-process controls; solvent recovery was integrated to stabilise campaign economics.
Quality
Specification, impurity limits and COA format were aligned before release; batch traceability was maintained across the coordinated campaign.
Result
The molecule was manufactured at suitable capability rather than being forced into an unsuitable single plant — establishing a repeatable supply path for the customer.
